The Register of Derry Cathedral 1642-1703

Updated: Mar 6, 2019

The Register of Derry Cathedral (St. Columb’s), Parish of Templemore, Londonderry 1642-1703 was introduced to me by Donna Burden Hart, author of a voluminous 2015 book on her Daugherty family titled, “Descendants of Owen Dogharty of the north of Ireland”. I obtained a digital copy of the Register from IrishFamilyHistoryCentre.com and went to work identifying the Ó Dochartaighs in it.

This volume contains vital records written down in the early registers of St. Columb’s Cathedral in Derry. St. Columb’s is in the Parish of Templemore, but according to the books’ Index of Places, the parishes of Burt and Inch were, at that time, also portions of the parish of Templemore. After the colonization of Ulster came into full swing and Derry became revitalized as the City of Londonderry, one of the first major construction projects inside its new walls was that of the majestic Cathedral Church of St Columb which was finished in 1633. The cathedral still stands beautifully today as a historic landmark and an active church. While this church was part of the Anglican Church of Ireland, one genealogical study shows that there were some individuals of other denominations who used the Cathedral as a burial place or to register other vital records (Forrest).

The volume begins with “A Register of all the persons buried within the Church & Churchyard as well in the ould as new Church in the Citty of Londonderry beginninge from the name of John Cole in the last Register booke who was buried the xiith [12th] of May Anno Dni 1642…” It can be seen, then, that there were earlier registers for the periods prior to May 1642, but they have been lost to the ages. Despite this loss, the Derry register remains one of the oldest parish registers existing in Ireland. The original registers are roughly of letter size and are composed of bound parchment. Certain of the folios have been removed from or cut out of the original register at one point in time, in some places causing a loss of entries of births, marriages, etc. There were also periods, such as during the Siege of Derry, when recordkeeping was intermittent.

The Parish Register Society of Dublin published this 400+ page transcription of the historic registers in 1910. There are at least two more volumes published covering the years 1703-1732 and 1732-1775, which I hope to obtain, extract our related Clann names, and publish here in the future, as I have this one.

I have organized the entries below in chronological order: O'Doherty and variant first, followed by McDevitt and variant. If the entry was under a heading with other entries, following the entry's text I have placed that particular heading in brackets. If an entry has a footnote designated by an asterisk or cross, this will be placed in brackets following the entry and/or header. Following that is the page number identifying where that entry can be found in the 1910 transcription of the Registers. On a few occasions, I have placed a bracketed note of my own construct after the page number, to clarify information in the entry based on its context within the Register that makes it more clear to a reader who is not viewing it in its original context.

A few things I noticed going through the Register.

  • I saw the sad heart-breaking story of where Marye, the 16 month old daughter of Tarlo O Dogharty, a soldier, was buried July 28, 1674. It was only 19 days later when her father died, a “poore man”. Did he die of a broken heart?

  • Cornett James Doherty must have been fairly well off as he had a servant (Walter Brown). A Cornett (Cornet) was a low-grade commissioned officer in the British army.

  • There were so many children who died young, as living conditions were poor, famine and war tore the country, and medical understanding was minimal.

A few things I learned :

  • “Banes” (or Banns) was the term used to describe one’s intention to marry and, in the Church of Ireland, were often announced publicly by the minister to his congregation on three Sundays before the marriage was to take place.

  • The word “gossip” actually comes from the work godsibb, a person who sponsored the child’s baptism (today they’re called godparents).

Happy Searching!
